Weaning is the process of accustoming your child away from breastfeeding to drinking formula milk and eating solid food. Some children wean by themselves, while some have to be weaned patiently.
Until when should your child be breastfed?
There is no fixed rule on when to start weaning your child from breast milk. However, there are doctors who recommend weaning the child after six months of breastfeeding. Some mothers do not wean their children until they are two years old. Breastfeeding after two years has negative effects on the mother’s health.

How to wean your child
Start by introducing formula milk in your infant’s diet. There are many high quality infant’s milk found in the market. There are formulas which have enhanced probioticsor DHA content. There are also formulas for lactose intolerant children. Ask your pediatrician for the right formula milk for your baby.

By four months, start feeding your child solid food. You can feed your baby a spoonful of solid food before each breastfeeding session to decrease his/her breast milk consumption. Recommended solid food for infants includes mashed bananas, potatoes, porridge, spinach, and carrots.
Some children are harder to wean because they have grown accustomed to sucking. You can satisfy their urge to suck by introducing them to pacifiers and teething toys. Just make sure that such toys have been sterilized before giving it to the child.

Decreasing your milk production
If the volume of breast milk produced is significantly decreased, there is a very high likelihood that the infant would voluntarily wean himself or herself from breastfeeding. Drinking sage tea is said to decrease breast milk production.
