Nutrition-and-Rheumatism

Rheumatism is a condition wherein patients suffer pain and functional restrictionson the joints, spine, bones, muscles and tendons.

Nutrition

A strict diet could be used to control and reduce mild forms of rheumatism. For more severe forms of the disease, a strict diet can improve the quality of life, reduce the pain, and even skip the pain medications.

Patients with rheumatism should avoid eggs and consume more vegetables and whole grain products. They should also lessen their meat intake because these are rich in animal fats that contain arachidonic acid, which exacerbate rheumatism. They also avoid butter and pig liver.

Rheumatic patients are advised to eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids because they inhibit the formation of inflammatory substances. Rich in these needed healthy fats are various fish, soy, flaxseed, canola, walnuts and walnut oil.

In general, rheumatic patients should do the following:

Have a daily dose of various fruits and vegetables.

Have fish at least two to three times a week preferably mackerel, herring and salmon. Go for very minimal meat in your diet, at least only twice a week or none at all.

Favor oatmeal, brown rice or whole grain pasta.

Beware of hidden eggs in pastries and pasta.

Consume only two eggs per week at most.

Cook with olive oil and canola oil instead of animal fats.

Use only low-fat milk and dairy products.

Limit nicotine and alcohol consumption.

Assessment

Strictly following the above nutritional suggestions would mean fewer swollen and aching limbs and improved joint function in the long run. But there is no guarantee that the pain would disappear.

It is also important to move your body. Make every day a joint-training day, like walking, biking or swimming. Reducing weight is also a better choice.
