Glutamate intolerance is a condition that occurs due to sensitivity to glutamate, a flavor enhancer usually present in Asian food, spice blends, chips, canned food, cafeteria food and even packed goods.Glutamate is a salt of glutamic acid, one of 20 amino acids that occur in the human body.

Glutamate intolerance is considered one of the pseudo-allergies.

Symptoms

People react very differently to glutamate. The list of symptoms is long ranging from tingling sensations on the face, neck, shoulders and upper arms, high blood pressure, runny nose, skin rash or burn nausea and sweating. Patients also complained of feeling faint headache, numbness in the area of the neck and arms palpitations chest tightness diarrhea dry mouth chill muscle pain and watery and itchy eyes. Shortly after eating food with glutamate, the symptoms would persist, but usually, after half an hour these unpleasant symptoms are gone.

Complications

Glutamate intolerance would have a different effect on asthmatics because it can trigger an asthma attack. In case that the rashes manifest inside the body, the patient will suffer from troubled breathing and chest tightness that can t for trigger heart attack and stroke.For children, too much glutamate can result to fever, confusion and anxiety.

Causes

The body reacts with allergy symptoms after eating food with glutamate because it is very likely that the substance in the flavor enhancer is incompatible with a bodily function that is yet to be determined by researchers.

Treatment

Since the real reason why glutamate intolerance occurs is not known, there is really no known medicine against it. A patient with glutamate intolerance is advised to switch to a diet low in glutamate, or have to other choice but to totally skip it.
