Fructose intolerance is the condition when even just an intake of a small amount of fruit leads to bloating, abdominal cramping, abdominal pain and stomach rumblings.

In fructose intolerance, the fruit irritates the surrounding intestinal tissues to such extent that it leads to an increase instool volume. It also results to bloating due to the accumulation of gas in the large intestine.

Symptoms

Stomach problems, diarrhea, loud bowel sounds, cramping abdominal pain, bloating and watery diarrhea are the main symptoms of intestinal fructose intolerance.

Patients also complain of nausea and vomiting.

Complications

Because of the difficulties the body is experiencing, many patients with fructose intolerance complain of psychological problems such as impaired concentration and depression. The immune system is also affected and it is manifested through, bleeding, seizure, etc. The condition also triggers deficiencies in folic acid and zinc.

Causes

Fructose intolerance is caused by substances coming from fruits. However, fructose intolerance could be triggered by eating food made with ordinary household sugar. Those with fructose intolerance can react very differently to food with fruit, as the ratio of glucose to fructose is always crucial.

Treatment

People with fructose intolerance can still consume fruits and vegetables. They should just wisely choose what to eat. Pear, apple, or fig can cause nausea, heartburn and thin stools. Meanwhile, a banana or an avocado would cause no problems.

Vegetables such as zucchini, eggplant, red cabbage, squash and tomato are good, unproblematic choices, too. Mushrooms, fish, brown rice, meat and eggs could be tolerated. Unsweetened tea and coffee, beer, mineral water and red wine also cause few problems.
