
A wonderful blend of high-quality Arabica and heirloom Robusta, NH+ Classic Blend is a combination of high altitude Arabica coffees that originates from the trees grown at 4,500 feet above sea level, in the highlands of the Cordillera Mountains, in Benguet Province and high elevation Robusta coffee beans grown in the highlands of Cavite, Philippines. The result is a best balance of a strong flavour and a perfect fragrance that can evoke family and home atmospheres.
There are several species of coffee trees but most commercial coffee growers use primarily the Arabica and Robusta species. Arabica trees are believed to produce the highest quality beans. However, Robusta trees are more economically viable due to their heartiness. Today, coffees are rarely designated as Robusta or Arabica beans. The soil and environmental conditions play such a significant role in flavoring the beans, and that all coffee beans are labelled according to their geographic origins.
Caffea Canephora is the latin name for Robusta coffee. It was discovered by botanists in the former Belgian Congo. Robusta coffee beans may be smaller than Arabica coffee beans, but they provide twice the caffeine and usually taste more bitter. Robustas have been described as neutral, harsh and grainy. Once roasted, Robusta coffee tends to deliver a distinctive earthy flavour, usually with more bitterness than Arabica. This powerful flavour can be desirable in a blend to give it perceived “strength” and “finish.” As its robust nature and strength of finish enhances the flavor profile of Arabica blends for those who love their coffee strong.
High-quality Robustas are indespensable element in most “baristas’” espresso blends. It adds body, crema, and a distinct flavor to espresso. If you are familiar with the traditional Italian espresso you will recognize this taste. Blended with Arabica, pronunced bitterness, full bodied, wel-balanced, long lasting after taste.
I suspect centuries ago, this was the standard blend served in all households around the globe, before the days of modern hybrids and confined one-species tastes. What matters most, we have the luxury to enjoy varied flavours to satisfy our sophisticated buds.
