Young and Dying

“Oh, to be young and foolish…”

One of the foolish things that many young people think is that they’re immortal. Somehow, their brains are wired to make them think their youth shields them from all the malaise in the world and that they have scores of years to spare and think about leading better, healthier lives. But we healthier geeks know different. Let us tell you why.

Ryan Says:

“When I was 21, I had a near death experience. I had a cardiac arrest due to the lack of potassium in my body. I didn’t really give my health much thought. I still don’t give it as much attention as I should to be honest. Hehe. But at that moment, I really thought I was going to freeze up and die. There was one funny incident in the hospital where, I, being basically paralyzed had to pee and a friend had to help me. He was a true friend.”

Kim Says:

“Recently, I had a sudden attack of chest pains that have made me wonder if I was having a heart attack. All I could think of at that time was “I’m only 25. I can’t be having a heart attack.” Fortunately for me, it wasn’t one. But that experience has me thinking about health more.”

Between us, we’ve come up with a list of possible reasons why geeks like us are slowly dying without us even knowing us.

Too much fastfood encounters. There’s a fastfood restaurant in every corner. It’s so easy to walk to the counter or pass by the drive through to get a quarter-pounder burger with large fries and Coke or crispy fried chicken. True, such food fare is not inherently unhealthy but when you have them twice a day, everyday of the week, then your bound for major case of obesity and heart disease.

Online Uninterrupted. How many hours do you spend online or in front of your laptop? Most geeks spend most of their waking hours by their computers playing some hypnotic RPG or MMORPG. Some geeks we know don’t even sleep for days. We don’t have to be doctors to tell you that it is bad for you. Sleep is your body’s natural process of recharging itself. Don’t sleep and eventually your body goes haywire.

Lack of physical activity. We’ve both experienced this. You stay too long in front of your computer and your muscles feel like they’ve atrophied. Do this for years and you will find that even walking takes too much effort on your weak legs. Physical activity is necessary for the body to remain as healthy.

Fortunately for us, we’ve recognized our foolishness early and are now on our way to becoming healthier geeks. We hope that as you follow us on our journey, you’d do the same thing. Let’s all get healthy!
