The Importance of Consistency

Superstitions

We’ve often heard people, particularly women, saying “I need to lose weight by so and so in order to fit that dress.” It’s really amazing how a skimpy two-piece bikini, a wedding gown, or board shorts can motivate men and women to go on fad diet, stop putting junk in their body, and go on a health binge.

But you don’t need to be a doctor or nutritionist to know that going on a one-time health binge is not going to keep off those extra pounds away. More importantly, it will not keep you healthy. Being healthy takes a lifetime of self-discipline and consistent healthy choices in terms of the food you eat and the things that you do.

Let’s consider the case of Mary, a very excited bride-to-be. Several months before the wedding she went on a low-carb diet in order too look gorgeous on her wedding dress. She lost the 20 pounds necessary but gained it back plus a few more health problems after barely two months. A visit to the doctor revealed she has gall stones as a result of years and years of yo-yo dieting. She also developed amenorrhea because of the physical stress brought about by sudden changes in her weight and, consequently, her hormones.

Sadly, many people are like Mary. After achieving their ideal weight, they begin to slack off on the diet, deluded into thinking that they will stay that way. But crash dieters won’t and their health would be in worse state than before. What’s the key to keeping the excess weight off and staying healthy? CONSISTENCY! Here’s how you can stay consistent.

Think about the big picture: you just don’t want to lose weight, you want to be healthy.
Set aside at least an hour of your day for exercise.
Recruit someone to be your personal cheerleader to health.
Make it a habit to make healthy eating and lifestyle decisions.

Being healthy is all about consistency. Once you take the first step to a healthier you, don’t look back. Just keep taking one healthy step after another.
