The Seven Pillars of Health

Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder of the gastro-intestinal tract with discomfort in different parts of the abdomen and which often improve after a bowel movement. It is not a disease in the classical sense, because there is still no identifiable organic cause to explain the condition.

Symptoms

The person concerned suffers from cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, stool irregularities, nausea, feeling of incomplete defecation, and perhaps even depression.

Causes

As explained, the exact causes of irritable bowel syndrome are not yet clarified under the current state of medical research. But it is certain that the irritable bowel syndrome is caused by a variety of factors which may include the type of food and beverage intake and lifestyle.

Complications

The quality of life of the person concerned is affected by irritable bowel syndrome often over the years. In many cases, the complaints tend to re-appear. Only rarely is a therapy successful in solving the problem for a lifetime. Thus, people with irritable bowel syndrome have tendency to have psychological stress.

Nevertheless, irritable bowel syndrome is not a serious disease. The life expectancy of people affected is not restricted. Many sufferers fear serious complications such as cancer which is groundless.
