We’ve all grown up watching Disney movies where the princess meets the prince, falls in love with him, and lives happily ever after. Reality, unfortunately, is not like that. You actually need to make a lot effort and sacrifices to make relationships work. Here are some tips to developing a healthy relationship with the one you love.

Always communicate. One of the reasons why many relationships fail is that partners seem to forget how to communicate with each other. Remember that talking is not the only way you can communicate. You can write letters, emails, or even small notes if you can’t voice out what you feel. Plus, there’s also non-verbal communication. A look, a touch, a simple hug can convey a lot of things at times when words are not enough.

Tell the truth. Remember the saying that the truth will set you free? It’s true. A healthy relationship is an honest one. What good is a partner if you can’t say what’s on your mind and share your secrets? Plus, not telling the truth to your partner shows that you don’t trust his or her ability to handle the truth.

Cultivate trust. As many people say, trust is earned. Prove to your partner that he or she can trust you with her innermost thoughts and feelings. Let your partner know that when the going gets tough, you won’t leave him or her. Put your faith in your partner the same way you want him or her to have faith in you.

Grow together as individuals. Too often do we see couples who build their own world and close themselves to the rest of the world. This is not healthy for the simple reason that people are like plants. They will need room for growth. If one tries to hold back the other, then the relationship is doomed.

There’s no really a magic formula for making relationships because every relationship is different. Take these tips with a grain of salt and apply them as you see fit.
