halitosis

Bad breath is medically called halitosis. The topic is often taboo on the part of the patients as well as on the part of people around them.

Symptoms

Symptoms of bad breath include mouth sores and bleeding gums.

Complications

Halitosis might lead to depression if not treated properly.

Cause
The causes of bad breath or halitosis are many but it can be broadly divided into causes that are restricted to the oral cavity and those other causes.

Medically, halitosis occurs because of bacteria and decomposition in the mouth. These can be caused by lack of oral hygiene, dental plaque, infections with fungi, tongue coating and dental caries, root canals and open unclean dentures. Inflammation of the gums, also known as gingivitis, can cause bad breath.
Non-oral causes of halitosis are usually related to conditions in the nasopharyngeal area. Increased secretion of mucus, sinus infections or sinusitis, chronic rhinitis and inflammation of the nasopharyngeal area can lead to bad breath.

Bad breath can also be cause by bad health habits like heavy smoking and drug use. Halitosis can also be caused by gastro-intestinal diseases and diabetes mellitus.

Natural Treatment

Depending on the cause, a proper treatment is necessary. Regular brushing and flossing would be a good start. A regular thorough cleaning of the tongue helps in the management of bad breath. Similarly, the use of mouthwash can help manage bad breath.

Deposits and plaque inside the mouth and between the teeth should be addressed by a professional dental cleaning and periodontal treatment.

Contrary to popular opinion, the chewing of gum shows no lasting effect on the treatment of bad breath.
