Prostate is a tiny gland situated right below the bladder, enclosing the urethra and fronting the rectum. A significant body part, prostate gland stimulates proper urination by allowing the passage of urine through the urethra. Prostate gland also produces an alkaline fluid that is used in the creation of semen and is released during a sexual intercourse.
Because of its important functions, prostate gland has to be always in tiptop shape. However, a large number of men develop prostate problems, with men aged 40 and above as the most at risk for prostate abnormalities. Enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is the most common problem. BPH symptoms include difficulty in urination, strong urination sensation, a feeling that the bladder never runs out of urine, and, in severe cases, blood in the urine. Failure to treat BPH can lead to kidney problems.
Other than BPH, men are also at risk for prostate cancer, which is among the top men killers.
There are several treatment options for prostate problems. But like in the case of any other heath conditions, prostate problems can be dealt with a natural approach. One such approach is ayurveda.
Ayurveda for modern men
Ayurveda is a set of ancient Hindu medical practices. It is built around the belief that natural methods can enhance and prolong life. As such, any medical condition can be better treated with natural methods.
Treatment of prostate problems includes the use of herbs. Three examples are hog weed (boerhaavia diffusa), small caltrop (tribulus terrestris), and salep orchid (orchis mascula). Known in ayurveda as punarnava, hogweed is proven effective in treating urinary problems, while small caltrop, otherwise known as gokshura, is an Indian herb that is used in relieving symptoms of prostate abnormalities. Salep orchid, also called shalaba mishri, is an aphrodisiac that has potent properties against prostate problems.
Practices to maintain prostate health
Prostate problems are not only dealt with ayurvedic herbal treatments. Ultimately, ayurveda teaches that treatment and prevention of prostate abnormalities involve diet changes. Coffee, alcohol, and tea intake should be reduced, while water intake should be increased. Consumption of food items with high zinc content is advised, since zinc can reduce the risk for prostate problems.
Leading a healthy lifestyle is also important. Ayurveda recommends having a regular exercise to promote proper blood circulation. Swimming, walking, biking, and jogging will particularly benefit the prostate. Frequent urination, stress management, and pelvic exercises will also contribute a lot.
Because prostate abnormalities are serious cases, consultation with an ayurvedic physician is always advised before undergoing any treatment. Self-medication is dangerous.
