How should I start running?

How-Do-I-Start-Running

We’ve pondered about this question one night after one of our brainstorming sessions. We’ve just gotten involve in Natural Health and we deemed it fitting to start our journey to health by getting off our office chairs and doing some form of exercise. Running, or jogging as it turned out to be, was our chosen torture.

So, how did we start running? We made a checklist of what we need. First off, we need running shoes and clothes. That’s easy. We occasionally play ball so we each have a pair or comfortable rubber shoes.

Second, find a place to run. Fortunately, each of us lives in a subdivision where we can do our runs in familiar surroundings either in the morning or at night. Plus, we agreed to run together once a week either in the bay side of MOA or nearby parks. Geeks run together!

Third, determine how long we should run. This is really important to us. We’ve never taken running seriously before and we have no idea how many minutes should we run. We did a little online research and decided that we should start with 30 minute runs first. Not a minute more! Our untrained knees and lungs would probably complain if we ever went beyond the 30-minute mark.

After we ticked everything off our checklist, we scheduled the date and time of our first run. A day after our first run, our legs became sore. It appears we didn’t stretch right. So, for those who are thinking of running for fitness, do not forget to stretch for at least 10 minutes before and after the run. The before stretch would prep you legs for the activity while the after stretch will release the tension.

So how should you start running? You can do what we did or follow Nike, “Just Do It.”
